Joy Brown is a sculptor who wood fires her figurative work in her twenty-eight foot long anagama kiln in Connecticut. Her influence comes from the fact that she spent the first eighteen years of her life growing up in Japan. She then left to attend college in St. Petersburg Florida at Eckerd College, where she received her B.A. in fine arts in 1972. After college Joy took an apprenticeship position in Tamba, Japan with Toshio Ichino a thirteenth generation potter. that lasted from 1975 through 1978. She has dedicated a large amount of her time makes large wall murals. Nothing about her work is harsh, all of the pieces are visually soft and warm, when firing she places her work in the back end of the kiln which helps to achieve this result. In Brown's later years as a sculptor she has started to bronze some of her pieces.
Brown has shown her work in various countries. She has won awards for her work as well being a two time presenter at the first and second International Wood Fire Conference put on by the university of Iowa. Along with this she has also conducted many workshops demonstrating her hand built coil and paddle technique. Brown in also the current president and co-founder of Still Mountain Center a nonprofit arts organization that helps to build an understanding and exchange with the the United States to Asia.
